Name: Abasa @AbasaAsake
Real name: Abasa Asake
Abasa is from Kaduna State in Northern Nigeria. He is the son of a preacher, Musa Asake, who now lives in Jos. His family moved to the United States in 1987 and have been living there since then.
Although he is not sure when his love of music began, Abasa says that he found his voice at some point during his years in high school. As a child, Asaba recalls local artistes his father used to listen to on cassette tapes such as Dan Mai Awo who played the molo (an instrument similar to a guitar) and he would sing along with each tape. He also recalls hearing Michael Jacksons Thriller for the first time at his aunts house in Kaduna and being blown away.
After moving to America, bands like Tony Toni Tone, New Edition, Boys II Men and Stevie Wonder became a major influence on him and pushed his desire to sing.
In 2009, Abasa auditioned for American Idol and made it through to the Hollywood round of auditions. He was later featured on Not Just OK Hype feature that same year.
